Here's a sample of one of the more creative submissions from previous trainees.
Two other exemplary trainee submissions will be available in the Reading Corner:

Same Song, but Different Melody

Basically, the three singers all not so familiar to me, so I got some information about them from the Internet and gathered some ideas. But still, the feelings I get from the different versions of 'One' are unfamiliar. So I can't help but listening to them repeatedly and writing some notes. These notes have nothing to do with dictation or pronunciation.

The feelings are different but they are not clear; like the taste of sweet, salty, and sour. They are vague but the one thing in common I can pull out among them is 'loneliness'.

The first song seems to get out of the monotonous percussions of guitar in the 1970s and 1980s, and shows the harmony with the electrical sound of the 1990s. It is not so light and exciting like dance music and still not sticky and gloomy like jazz. If I draw the song, I would paint it blue - cold but cool. And I would draw a free bird in the sky and a snow boarder passing through the blue sky. They are free but they have something within.

The head of a flock of migratory birds looks decisive and full of self-confidence. It seems that he doesn't need any help from the others. But he is fully aware of his weaknesses and has lots of responsibilities to carry on by himself. Loneliness comes out of being a leader. He is different from the others but he should be 'one' with them to reach the destination.

The second song feels like the nimble hip-hop of the 1990s-2000s. It makes me follow the rhythm with my foot. But it still has a solitary feeling. So I would paint it yellow. While the first song needs help and reaches out its hand but is not fulfilled, this song moves forward hand in hand. It is light and comfortable with someone, rather than free. The monologues in the middle and the last parts have the scent of a hymn or other spiritual song and these make the mood solitary.

The final version of ONE shows the realization that they can't divide into two. It is too torturous to depart forever. This song has the loneliest color of the three.

In the monotonous monologue guitar sound of the 1970s, the singer sings outside his world and has a far-sighted description. He has lost his greed and has emptied his hands.  Perhaps even he holds his own hands. He is cynical. What if I draw pictures with black or grey?

Both being alone and getting together of two different objectives make us weary and exhausted. In spite of those troubles, we find the real meaning of our existence from 'getting together'.  After we get fully together, we can stand alone and find ourselves.

- The End -
